# Hobbs Coast

Coast in Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica

**Hobbs Coast** ([74°50′S 132°0′W / 74.833°S 132.000°W / -74.833; -132.000](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Hobbs_Coast&params=74_50_S_132_0_W_scale:4000000_source:GNIS)) is that portion of the coast of [Marie Byrd Land](/source/Marie_Byrd_Land), [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica) extending from [Cape Burks](/source/Cape_Burks) to a point on the coast opposite eastern [Dean Island](/source/Dean_Island_(Antarctica)), at [74°42′S 127°05′W / 74.700°S 127.083°W / -74.700; -127.083](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Hobbs_Coast&params=74_42_S_127_05_W_source:GNIS), or between the [Ruppert Coast](/source/Ruppert_Coast) in the west and the [Bakutis Coast](/source/Bakutis_Coast) in the east. It stretches from 136°50′W to 127°35′. The coast was discovered by the [US Antarctic Service](/source/US_Antarctic_Service) (1939–1941) and named for Professor [William H. Hobbs](/source/William_H._Hobbs) of the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan), a [glaciologist](/source/Glaciologist) specializing in polar geography and history. The [United States Geological Survey](/source/United_States_Geological_Survey) completely mapped the coast from ground surveys and [U.S. Navy](/source/U.S._Navy) air photos, 1959–1965.[1]
