''Hitler Lives'' is based on the War Department film ''[Your Job in Germany](/source/Your_Job_in_Germany)'', which was produced shortly before the [end of World War II in Europe](/source/end_of_World_War_II_in_Europe). That film was directed by an uncredited [Frank Capra](/source/Frank_Capra), written by Theodor Geisel, later known as [Dr. Seuss](/source/Dr._Seuss), and narrated by [Dana Andrews](/source/Dana_Andrews); it was only shown to soldiers and was never released to the public.<ref>{{cite web |title=Oscar's Docs, 1941–45: Bravery and Bias |url=http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/film_screenings/4814 |publisher=Museum of Modern Art |access-date=January 1, 2009}}</ref>

While retaining some of the original film footage, ''Hitler Lives'' added both more archival footage and dramatized scenes.<ref>Short, Robert (2022) "Warner Bros.- First National Pictures 1923-1967"</ref> The film warns that the defeated German population still contains [Nazi](/source/Nazi) supporters and that the world must stay ever vigilant against the prospect that a new [Hitler](/source/Hitler) will arise within Germany. The crematoriums of a [concentration camp](/source/Nazi_concentration_camps) are shown, only using "victims" to describe those murdered (without mentioning that they were [Jewish](/source/Jewish)). Finally, the film warns against [fascism in the United States](/source/fascism_in_the_United_States).
