Professor of History

**Hirotake Maeda** is Professor of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of [Tokyo Metropolitan University](/source/Tokyo_Metropolitan_University). He specializes in [Middle Eastern Studies](/source/Middle_Eastern_Studies), Eurasian Studies, and the histories of [Iran](/source/Iran) and the [Caucasus](/source/Caucasus). He focuses in particular on the origins of the *[gholam](/source/Gholaman-e_khasseh-ye_sharifeh)* (also spelled *ghulam*) military "slaves" of [Safavid Iran](/source/Safavid_Iran) and their role and position in Iran's history, using [Persian](/source/Persian_language) and [Georgian](/source/Georgian_language) sources.[1][2]
