# Hirna

**Hirna** ([Oromo](/source/Oromo_language): *Hirna*) a town Located in the [West Hararghe Zone](/source/Mirab_Hararghe_Zone) Of [Oromia](/source/Oromia), [Ethiopia](/source/Ethiopia) it has a latitude and longitude of [9°13′N 41°06′E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=9_13_N_41_06_E) and an altitude of 1763 meters above sea level. It is the larger of the two towns in [Tulo](/source/Tulo) [woreda](/source/Woreda) and is inhabited by the [Ituu](/source/Ituu) Oromo.[1]

## History

The town of Hirna is located on the main highway between [Chiro](/source/Chiro_(woreda)) and [Haramaya](/source/Haramaya) in the [Chercher Mountains](/source/Chercher_province). This follows an old caravan route between [Abyssinia](/source/Abyssinia) and [Emirate of Harar](/source/Emirate_of_Harar), which was in use during [Arthur Rimbaud](/source/Arthur_Rimbaud)'s residence at [Harar](/source/Harar) city.[2]

In response to king [Menelik's](/source/Menelik_II_of_Ethiopia) orders to occupy the [Cherchers](/source/Chercher_province), in November 1886 *[Dejazmach](/source/Dejazmach)* [Wolde Gabriel](/source/Wolde_Gabriel) invaded the [Emirate of Harar](/source/Emirate_of_Harar) with [Abyssinian](/source/Ethiopian_Empire) militias, and set up camp at Hirna. According to [Harold G. Marcus](/source/Harold_G._Marcus), his army "was in poor shape, reduced to a relatively small number by sickness and desertions." A night attack by Emir ['Abd Allah's](/source/'Abd_Allah_II_ibn_'Ali_'Abd_ash-Shakur) army at the [Battle of Hirna](/source/Battle_of_Hirna) routed the *Dejazmach'*s force, sending them fleeing westward towards the [Awash River](/source/Awash_River).[3]

Telephone service came to this town between 1954 and 1968.[4]

Notable local inhabitants include the artist [Alemayehu Bizuneh](/source/Alemayehu_Bizuneh) (born 1934). He studied in France (1966–70), and Germany (1975–76) and later had a residency at the [National Museum of Ethiopia](/source/National_Museum_of_Ethiopia) in 1980.[4] Hirna is also home city of former Deputy Prime minister of Ethiopia [Addisu Legesse](/source/Addisu_Legesse).

## Demographics

Based on figures from the [Central Statistical Agency](/source/Central_Statistical_Agency_(Ethiopia)), in 2005 Hirna has an estimated total population of 16,726, of whom 8,360 are men and 8,366 are women.[5] The 1994 national census reported this town had a total population of 9,353 of whom 4,534 were men and 4,819 women.
