# Hintertaunus

The **Hintertaunus** ("Rear Taunus") is a [natural region](/source/Natural_region) in the German [Central Upland](/source/Central_Upland) range of the [Taunus](/source/Taunus) (major unit group 30), which rises to a height of and lies north of the [High Taunus](/source/High_Taunus) (301). It extends as far as the river [Rhine](/source/Rhine) to the west, the river [Lahn](/source/Lahn) to the north and the [Wetterau](/source/Wetterau) hills to the east. It is divided into the **[Eastern Hintertaunus](#Eastern_Hintertaunus)** (major unit 302), **[Idstein Basin](#Idstein_Basin)** (303) and **[Western Hintertaunus](#Western_Hintertaunus)** (304).
