The **Hindmarsh River** is a river located in the [Fleurieu Peninsula](/source/Fleurieu_Peninsula) region in the Australian state of [South Australia](/source/South_Australia).

## Course and features

The Hindmarsh River rises in the [Mount Lofty Range](/source/Mount_Lofty_Range) below Mount Cone flows generally south by east through the Hindmarsh Valley before reaching its [mouth](/source/Mouth_(river)) and emptying into [Encounter Bay](/source/Encounter_Bay) at [Victor Harbor](/source/Victor_Harbor%2C_South_Australia). The river descends 257 metres (843 ft) over its 23-kilometre (14 mi) [course](/source/Watercourse).[1]

## Etymology

The river is named in honour of [Rear Admiral](/source/Rear_Admiral_(Royal_Navy)) Sir [John Hindmarsh](/source/John_Hindmarsh) [KH](/source/Knight_of_the_Royal_Guelphic_Order), [RN](/source/Serving_Officer_of_the_Royal_Navy), the first [Governor of South Australia](/source/Governor_of_South_Australia).
