Hinderwell is mentioned in the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) of 1086 as *Hildrewell*, which is said to derive from the well of Saint [Hilda of Whitby](/source/Hilda_of_Whitby), the Abbess of [Whitby Abbey](/source/Whitby_Abbey).[3] [St Hilda's Church, Hinderwell](/source/St_Hilda's_Church,_Hinderwell) is named for her, as it St Hilda's Well in the churchyard.[4] [Hinderwell Methodist Church](/source/Hinderwell_Methodist_Church) was built in 1873.[5]
