# Hildesheim loop

The **Hildesheim loop** ([German](/source/German_language): *Hildesheimer Schleife*), also known as the **Sorsum curve** or the **Hildesheim curve**, is a 3.7 km long [German passenger railway](/source/Rail_transport_in_Germany). It is single-track and electrified throughout. The line was opened in 1991.

## Route

The southern end of the line branches off the [Hanover–Würzburg high-speed line](/source/Hanover%E2%80%93W%C3%BCrzburg_high-speed_railway) at Sorsum junction, 29.5 km south of [Hanover](/source/Hanover). The loop leaves running northeast from the HSL, which is running to the northwest. At Himmelsthür junction, 4.7 km west of Hildesheim, it connects with [the double-track line](/source/Lehrte%E2%80%93Nordstemmen_railway) from Hanover and [Nordstemmen](/source/Nordstemmen) to [Hildesheim](/source/Hildesheim), which runs east–west, at the 45.4 km mark. There is a down grade towards Hildesheim.

The line connects the high-speed line with [Hildesheim station](/source/Hildesheim_Hauptbahnhof), conveying [Intercity-Express](/source/Intercity-Express) trains running between [Frankfurt am Main](/source/Frankfurt_(Main)_Hauptbahnhof) and [Berlin](/source/Berlin_Hauptbahnhof). ICE trains run from Hildesheim to [Brunswick](/source/Brunswick_Hauptbahnhof) and the [Weddel loop](/source/Weddel_loop) to [Wolfsburg](/source/Wolfsburg) and [Berlin](/source/Berlin_Hauptbahnhof) via the [Hanover–Berlin high-speed line](/source/Hanover%E2%80%93Berlin_high-speed_railway). During the day, trains run hourly both ways on the loop.
