[Historically](/source/Historic_counties_of_England) part of the [West Riding of Yorkshire](/source/West_Riding_of_Yorkshire), it is part of the [City of Doncaster](/source/City_of_Doncaster). The village is located in the [Adwick le Street & Carcroft](/source/Adwick_le_Street_%26_Carcroft_(ward)) ward of Doncaster MBC. Although it does not currently have an air of prosperity, Highfields was built so that most houses either overlooked farmland or woodland, the ornamental [Highfields Lake](/source/Highfields_Lake), or the greens in the centre of the village. Like its neighbour, [Woodlands](/source/Woodlands%2C_South_Yorkshire), Highfields lies between the historic [Great North Road](/source/Great_North_Road_(United_Kingdom)) and the [Roman road](/source/Roman_road).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] The [Roman road](/source/Roman_road) is a branch of [Ermine Street](/source/Ermine_Street), branching off near [Lincoln](/source/Lincoln%2C_Lincolnshire) and rejoining near [York](/source/York). Although a separate branch, it is also known as [Ermine Street](/source/Ermine_Street). Locally, this stretch of the road is known as the [Roman Ridge](/source/Roman_Ridge), although it is more colloquially known as the Roman Rigg.
