'''Hickleton''' is a village and [civil parish](/source/civil_parish) in the [City of Doncaster](/source/City_of_Doncaster) in [South Yorkshire](/source/South_Yorkshire), England. [Historically](/source/Historic_counties_of_England) part of the [West Riding of Yorkshire](/source/West_Riding_of_Yorkshire), it had a population of 291,<ref>[http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/viewFullDataset.do?instanceSelection=03070&productId=779&$ph=60_61&datasetInstanceId=3070&startColumn=1&numberOfColumns=8&containerAreaId=790254 Office for National Statistics : ''Census 2001 : Parish Headcounts : Doncaster''] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110613044117/http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/viewFullDataset.do?instanceSelection=03070&productId=779&$ph=60_61&datasetInstanceId=3070&startColumn=1&numberOfColumns=8&containerAreaId=790254 |date=13 June 2011 }} Retrieved 27 August 2009.</ref> which had reduced slightly to 274 at the 2011 census.{{cn|date=January 2023}} Hickleton is {{convert|6|mi|km|0}} west of [Doncaster](/source/Doncaster) and {{convert|8|mi|km|0}} east of [Barnsley](/source/Barnsley).

There are records of Hickleton's history dating back to Saxon times although some consider the settlement to have Roman roots.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.hickleton.org.uk/HickletonHeritageTrust.htm |title=Dabell, J. A., 'Hickleton Heritage Trust' website |access-date=3 November 2010 |archive-date=23 September 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100923070250/http://www.hickleton.org.uk/HickletonHeritageTrust.htm |url-status=dead }}</ref>

The name Hickleton probably derives from the [Old English](/source/Old_English) ''hicoltūn'' meaning '[woodpecker](/source/woodpecker) settlement', though the first element may be derived from the personal name ''Hicel''.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk/map/place/Yorkshire+WR/Hickleton|title=Key to English Place-names|website=kepn.nottingham.ac.uk|accessdate=19 October 2025}}</ref>

More recently, it was the "estate village" of [Hickleton Hall](/source/Hickleton_Hall), formerly the home of the [earls of Halifax](/source/Edward_Wood%2C_1st_Earl_of_Halifax) and then a [Sue Ryder Care Home](/source/Sue_Ryder_Care) until 2013.

The parish church, [St. Wilfrid's](/source/St_Wilfrid's_Church%2C_Hickleton), is mainly of [mediaeval](/source/mediaeval) construction with [Norman](/source/Norman_architecture) features that was restored in [Victorian times](/source/Victorian_times) by [George Frederick Bodley](/source/George_Frederick_Bodley).

Two locations in Hickleton appear in the top ten worst locations in England for air quality; the village has the most polluted air in [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire). There have been numerous campaigns to construct a bypass around the village and [Marr](/source/Marr%2C_South_Yorkshire) to the east.<ref>[https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/local-news/what-life-like-living-yorkshires-18695325 What life is like living in Yorkshire's most polluted village - YorkshireLive] Retrieved 9 January 2023.</ref>
