Slavic ethnic group

Lands of the Hevelli and Sprevane,
about 1150

The **Hevelli** or **Hevellians/ Navellasîni** (sometimes *Havolane*; [German](/source/German_language): *Heveller* or *Stodoranen*; [Polish](/source/Polish_language): *Hawelanie* or *Stodoranie*; [Czech](/source/Czech_language): *Havolané* or *Stodorané*) were a tribe of the [Polabian Slavs](/source/Polabian_Slavs), who settled around the middle [Havel](/source/Havel) river in the present-day [Havelland](/source/Havelland) region of [Brandenburg](/source/Brandenburg) in eastern [Germany](/source/Germany) from the 8th century onwards.[1][2]

[West Slavic](/source/West_Slavs) tribes ("[Wends](/source/Wends)") had settled in the *[Germania Slavica](/source/Germania_Slavica)* region from the 7th century onwards. The *Hehfeldi* as they were called by the [Bavarian Geographer](/source/Bavarian_Geographer) about 850 built their main fortification at Brenna (later to become [Brandenburg an der Havel](/source/Brandenburg_an_der_Havel)) and a large eastern outpost at the current site of [Spandau](/source/Spandau_(locality)). In 906 the Hevelli princess [Drahomíra](/source/Drahom%C3%ADra) married the [Přemyslid](/source/P%C5%99emyslid_dynasty) duke [Vratislaus I of Bohemia](/source/Vratislaus_I%2C_Duke_of_Bohemia). [Baçlabič](/source/Ba%C3%A7labi%C4%8D) was the prince of Hevelli from 921-936, succeeded by [Tugumir](/source/Otto_the_Great#Slavic_wars).[3][4]

Brenna was occupied by the [German](/source/Kingdom_of_Germany) king [Henry the Fowler](/source/Henry_the_Fowler) in his 928/29 Slavic campaign and incorporated into the *[Marca Geronis](/source/Marca_Geronis)*. Henry's successor [Otto I](/source/Otto_I%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor) in 948 established the [Bishopric of Brandenburg](/source/Diocese_of_Brandenburg) in order to Christianize the pagan population. These efforts were aborted in the course of the 983 [Great Slav Rising](/source/Slavic_revolt_of_983) in the [Northern March](/source/Northern_March), which again defied German control over the region. Together with the neighbouring [Sprevane](/source/Sprevane) in the east, the Hevelli waged war against not only the German [Saxon](/source/Duchy_of_Saxony) forces to the west, but also other Slavic tribes.

The baptized Hevelli prince [Pribislav](/source/Pribislav-Henry) (died 1150) finally bequested his lands to the [Ascanian](/source/House_of_Ascania) count [Albert the Bear](/source/Albert_the_Bear). Albert until 1157 could re-conquer the territory of the former Northern March, whereafter he established the [Margraviate of Brandenburg](/source/Margraviate_of_Brandenburg). The Slavic Hevelli were gradually assimilated by [German](/source/Germans) settlers in the course of the *[Ostsiedlung](/source/Ostsiedlung)*.
