**Henrietta Sara Louise Baynes**[1] (born 16 August 1956) is an English film, television and theatre actress.[2][3] She began her career in ballet by training from the age of 10 at the [Royal Ballet School](/source/Royal_Ballet_School) and made her professional debut, at the age of 12, in [Rudolf Nureyev](/source/Rudolf_Nureyev)'s *[The Nutcracker](/source/The_Nutcracker)* followed by *[The Sleeping Beauty](/source/The_Sleeping_Beauty_(ballet))* at the [Royal Opera House](/source/Royal_Opera_House), [Covent Garden](/source/Covent_Garden). In her mid-teens she moved from dance to acting.

She began her acting career at 17, as an acting [ASM](/source/Assistant_Stage_Manager) in repertory theatre. She was married to film director [Ken Russell](/source/Ken_Russell) from 1992 to 1999; they had one son.

## Early life and education

Baynes was born in Boscombe Hospital, [Bournemouth](/source/Bournemouth), the daughter of [aeronautical engineer](/source/Aeronautical_engineer) [Leslie Baynes](/source/L._E._Baynes), who designed what is believed to be the oldest flying [glider](/source/Glider_(sailplane)) in the United Kingdom, and Margot (née Findlay). Baynes attended the [Elmhurst Ballet School](/source/Elmhurst_School_for_Dance) in [Camberley](/source/Camberley) in [Surrey](/source/Surrey), where a contemporary was the actress [Laura Hartong](/source/Laura_Hartong). ### Acting career

Her stage career has involved many roles: in 1979 in [John Osborne](/source/John_Osborne)'s *[Inadmissible Evidence](/source/Inadmissible_Evidence)* at the [Royal Court Theatre](/source/Royal_Court_Theatre), and in 1984, a comic performance alongside [Maureen Lipman](/source/Maureen_Lipman) and [Lionel Jeffries](/source/Lionel_Jeffries) in the Theatre of Comedy's *[See How They Run](/source/See_How_They_Run_(play))*. In 1991, she appeared with [Edward Fox](/source/Edward_Fox_(actor)), in *[The Philanthropist](/source/The_Philanthropist_(play))* at [Wyndham's Theatre](/source/Wyndham's_Theatre) and in 1997, she appeared as Lady Fidget in [William Wycherley](/source/William_Wycherley)'s *[The Country Wife](/source/The_Country_Wife)*. Her most recent stage performance was in 2004, as Shirley in *Revelations* by [Stephen Lowe](/source/Stephen_Lowe_(playwright)) at the [Hampstead Theatre](/source/Hampstead_Theatre).

During her career she has received three best actress nominations for her performances: in 1991, as Rita in [Henrik Ibsen](/source/Henrik_Ibsen)'s *[Little Eyolf](/source/Little_Eyolf)* (Off-West End Awards), in 1992, as Maddy in [Michael Wall](/source/Michael_Wall_(playwright))'s *[Women Laughing](/source/Women_Laughing)* (Manchester Evening News Awards) and as [Marilyn Monroe](/source/Marilyn_Monroe) in [Marilyn Bowering](/source/Marilyn_Bowering)'s *Anyone Can See I Love You* (Sony and Prix Italia Awards).

Baynes has also appeared on television including, in 1976, as a missing underage girl in *[Z-Cars](/source/Z-Cars)*, in 1981, [Agatha Christie](/source/Agatha_Christie)'s *[The Seven Dials Mystery](/source/The_Seven_Dials_Mystery)*, in 1985, with [Pauline Collins](/source/Pauline_Collins) and [Michael Gambon](/source/Michael_Gambon) in *The Tropical Moon Over Dorking*, in 1990, as the wife of [Stephen Fry](/source/Stephen_Fry) in [Simon Gray](/source/Simon_Gray)'s *Old Flames*, in 1993, as Hilda in [Ken Russell](/source/Ken_Russell)'s *[Lady Chatterley’s Lover](/source/Lady_Chatterley_(TV_serial))* and in *The Secret Life of Sir Arnold Bax*. She appeared as Vera Rowley in the BBC series *[The Hour](/source/The_Hour_(BBC_TV_series))* in 2011, and was also in BBC1's *[The Casual Vacancy](/source/The_Casual_Vacancy_(miniseries))* in 2015.[3]

She studied a fine art BA degree at Central St Martins. She had an exhibition at the Strand Gallery, London entitled *Betsy and Blapsy*.[5]

## Personal life

She was married to film director [Ken Russell](/source/Ken_Russell) from 1992 to 1999; their son, Rex, was born on 7 January 1993 and is a film director.
