== Life==
Born in Berlin, Neef worked from 1960-1973 at the [VEB Deutsche Schallplatten](/source/VEB_Deutsche_Schallplatten) in Berlin. Since 1973 he was at the [Komische Oper Berlin](/source/Komische_Oper_Berlin), and since 1981 Neef has also been a lecturer at the {{Ill|Staatliche Ballettschule und Schule für Artistik (Berlin)|de}}.

Neef wrote - often together with his wife, [Sigrid Neef](/source/Sigrid_Neef) - scientific treatises on opera research as well as record reviews, specialist articles and several ballet [libretti](/source/libretto) (for example to music by [Richard Wagner](/source/Richard_Wagner), [Jean Sibelius](/source/Jean_Sibelius), [Franz Schreker](/source/Franz_Schreker), [Igor Strawinsky](/source/Igor_Strawinsky) and [Werner Egk](/source/Werner_Egk)).

Neef died in [Beverungen](/source/Beverungen) in 2017 at the age of 80.
