# Herman Schatz

**Herman Schatz, Sr.** (December 26, 1843 – June 28, 1906) was an American politician and blacksmith.

Born in [Greifenberg](/source/Greifenberg), [Kingdom of Bavaria](/source/Kingdom_of_Bavaria), Schatz emigrated with his parents to the United States in 1851. Schatz lived in [Watertown, Wisconsin](/source/Watertown,_Wisconsin), then in [Cedarburg, Wisconsin](/source/Cedarburg,_Wisconsin), and then finally settled in [Brookfield, Wisconsin](/source/Brookfield,_Wisconsin). Schatz operated a hotel and blacksmith shop. During the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War), Schatz served as a blacksmith in the [Union Army](/source/Union_Army). In 1882, Schatz served in the [Wisconsin State Assembly](/source/Wisconsin_State_Assembly) and was a [Democrat](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)). Schatz died at his home in Brookfield, Wisconsin.[1][2]
