Hewitt in 1915,<ref name=Hewi1915 /> and its three described species are [endemic](/source/endemic) to [South Africa](/source/South_Africa).<ref name=wsc />

It was previously considered a [junior synonym](/source/Synonym_(taxonomy)) of ''[Hermacha](/source/Hermacha)'',<ref name=Rave1985 /> but was elevated to genus in 2021.<ref name=Rios2021 /> The type species, ''Hermachola crudeni'', was originally described under the name ''"Hermacha crudeni"''.<ref name=Hewi1913 />
