1928 two-act musical

***Here's Howe!*** is a [musical](/source/Musical_theatre) in two acts with music by [Roger Wolfe Kahn](/source/Roger_Wolfe_Kahn) and [Joseph Meyer](/source/Joseph_Meyer_(songwriter)) and lyrics by [Irving Caesar](/source/Irving_Caesar).[1][2] The [swing music](/source/Swing_music) standard "[Crazy Rhythm](/source/Crazy_Rhythm)" was written for this show.[3] The work's [musical book](/source/Musical_theatre#Book_musicals) was written by [Fred Thompson](/source/Fred_Thompson_(writer)) and [Paul Gerard Smith](/source/Paul_Gerard_Smith).[1] The musical is set mainly in [Boston, Massachusetts](/source/Boston%2C_Massachusetts) at the Tredwell Motor Company where the play's central characters work; but with additional scenes in Havana, Cuba when the characters take a trip abroad.[4]

## Productions

The musical premiered at the [Shubert Theatre](/source/Shubert_Theatre_(Boston)) in Boston on April 23, 1928, for a week of [tryout](/source/Tryout_(theatre)) performances.[5]

The work opened on [Broadway](/source/Broadway_theatre) at the [Broadhurst Theatre](/source/Broadhurst_Theatre) on May 1, 1928, and was produced by Alex. A. Aarons and [Vinton Freedley](/source/Vinton_Freedley) with [Paul Lannin](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Paul_Lannin&action=edit&redlink=1) serving as musical director; [Sammy Lee](/source/Sammy_Lee_(choreographer)) as choreographer; costumes designed by Kiviette; and scenic designs by John Wenger.[6][2] It closed after 71 performances on June 30, 1928.[2]

*[Time](/source/Time_(magazine))* magazine called the Broadway production one "for fun-loving rovers".[7]

## Cast

The production marked the American debut of French soprano and actress [Colette D'Arville](/source/Colette_D'Arville) as Claudette Pernier.[8][5] Other leading performers in the show included [William Frawley](/source/William_Frawley) as Toplis, [Ben Bernie](/source/Ben_Bernie) as Dan Dabney, [Eric Blore](/source/Eric_Blore) as Sir Basil Carraway, [Irene Delroy](/source/Irene_Delroy) as Joyce Baxter, Peggy Chamberlain as Cora Bibby, [Allen Kearns](/source/Allen_Kearns) as Billy Howe, Helen Carrington as Toni Treadwell, Ross Himes as Mr. Petrie, and Dillon Ober as Wilbur.[6]
