**Hercules Mooney** (1715–1800) was an [Irish](/source/Ireland) veteran of the [French and Indian](/source/French_and_Indian_War) and [American Revolutionary](/source/American_Revolutionary_War) wars.

Born to a catholic family from present day County Offaly, in 1733 he emigrated to the [Thirteen Colonies](/source/Thirteen_Colonies) and settled in [Dover, New Hampshire](/source/Dover%2C_New_Hampshire). In 1738 he married Elizabeth Evans, also of Dover. Having been a tutor back in Ireland, Mooney became a teacher and schoolmaster at Dover and after 1750 in [Durham](/source/Durham%2C_New_Hampshire).

In 1757 Mooney joined the [New Hampshire Provincial Regiment](/source/New_Hampshire_Provincial_Regiment) to fight in the [French and Indian War](/source/French_and_Indian_War) as a [captain](/source/Captain_(United_States)) in command of a company of soldiers. Capt. Mooney was at the [Siege of Fort William Henry](/source/Siege_of_Fort_William_Henry) that ended in the fall of the fort and attack by the Native Americans. After the end of the war Mooney returned to Durham to teach and was elected [selectman](/source/Selectman) in 1765.

In 1775 he was a delegate to the provincial congress at [Exeter, New Hampshire](/source/Exeter%2C_New_Hampshire) and in 1776 was appointed [lieutenant colonel](/source/Lieutenant_colonel) in the [Continental Army](/source/Continental_Army). Lt. Col. Mooney served in Col. [Pierse Long](/source/Pierse_Long)'s regiment ([Long's Regiment](/source/Long's_Regiment)) and fought at the [Battle of Fort Anne](/source/Battle_of_Fort_Anne) during the [Saratoga campaign](/source/Saratoga_campaign). During 1778 and 1779 Col. Mooney served on New Hampshire's [Committee of Safety](/source/Committee_of_Safety_(American_Revolution)). In June 1779 he was given command of a [regiment](/source/Regiment) of the [New Hampshire Militia](/source/New_Hampshire_Militia) that was sent to [Rhode Island](/source/Rhode_Island) to keep watch on the [British Army](/source/British_Army) at [Newport](/source/Newport%2C_Rhode_Island).

After the end of the [Revolutionary War](/source/American_Revolutionary_War) Col. Mooney moved to [Holderness, New Hampshire](/source/Holderness%2C_New_Hampshire) and served as a [justice of the peace](/source/Justice_of_the_peace) for [Grafton County](/source/Grafton_County%2C_New_Hampshire) and in the [New Hampshire General Court](/source/New_Hampshire_General_Court). He died at his home in April 1800.
