**Sir Herbert Frederick Cook, 3rd Baronet** (18 November 1868 – 4 May 1939) was an English art patron and art historian.

## Life

Only son of [Sir Frederick Cook, 2nd Baronet](/source/Sir_Frederick_Cook,_2nd_Baronet), he was educated at [Harrow School](/source/Harrow_School) and [Balliol College, Oxford](/source/Balliol_College,_Oxford). He was subsequently called to the Bar by the [Inner Temple](/source/Inner_Temple) in 1895. He married in 1898 to Mary Hood, daughter of [Arthur Hood, 2nd Viscount Bridport](/source/Arthur_Hood,_2nd_Viscount_Bridport), with whom he had one son ([Francis](/source/Sir_Francis_Cook,_4th_Baronet), who succeeded him) and two daughters.

In 1920, he succeeded to his father's [baronetcy](/source/Cook_baronets), along with the [first baronet](/source/Sir_Francis_Cook,_1st_Baronet)'s art collection, which he catalogued in three volumes in 1913 and which thereafter became known in art history publications as the "Cook Collection, Doughty House, Richmond". Though he was not a major collector himself, he did add [Rembrandt](/source/Rembrandt)’s *Portrait of a boy* ([Norton Simon Foundation](/source/Norton_Simon_Foundation)) and [Titian](/source/Titian)’s *[La Schiavona](/source/La_Schiavona)* ([National Gallery](/source/National_Gallery), [London](/source/London)).

## Cook Collection

He was an art historian who wrote a catalog raisonné of [Giorgione](/source/Giorgione) works in 1900, and managed and hosted visits to his family's collection which included a [Cima da Conegliano](/source/Cima_da_Conegliano) *[Madonna and Child](/source/Madonna_and_Child_(Cima_da_Conegliano,_private_collection))* and two Giorgiones at [Doughty House](/source/Doughty_House).[1] He was a co-founder of the [Art Fund](/source/Art_Fund), and in 1903 was founding member of the "Consultative Committee" of *[The Burlington Magazine](/source/The_Burlington_Magazine)*.[2] Other members were [Harold Dillon, 17th Viscount Dillon](/source/Harold_Dillon,_17th_Viscount_Dillon) and [James Lindsay, Lord Balcarres](/source/James_Lindsay,_26th_Earl_of_Crawford), Sir [Martin Conway](/source/Martin_Conway,_1st_Baron_Conway_of_Allington), [Sidney Colvin](/source/Sidney_Colvin), [Campbell Dodgson](/source/Campbell_Dodgson), [Herbert Horne](/source/Herbert_Horne), [Charles Eliot Norton](/source/Charles_Eliot_Norton), [Claude Phillips](/source/Claude_Phillips), and [Roger Fry](/source/Roger_Fry).[3] Later Roger Fry disagreed with some of Cook's optimistic Giorgione attributions, especially Cook's 1913 acquisition of *La Schiavona*, which he catalogued as *The portrait of Caterina Cornaro by Giorgione (finished by Titian)*.[4][5][2] The other Giorgione in his collection that was purchased in 1907, has since been reattributed to [Giovanni Cariani](/source/Giovanni_Cariani).[6]

He was a member of the [Arundel Society](/source/Arundel_Society) and served on committees for foreign exhibitions and organised several in London.[2] In 1930, he also gave £1000 to the [University of London](/source/University_of_London) for the [Courtauld Institute of Art](/source/Courtauld_Institute_of_Art).
