# Herbert Chang

**Herbert Samuel Chang** (born 2 July 1952) is a former West Indian [cricketer](/source/Cricket) who played in one [Test match](/source/Test_cricket) in 1979.

Born in [Jamaica](/source/Jamaica) of Chinese extraction,[1] Chang was a diminutive left-handed batsman who toured [England](/source/England) with the West Indies Young Cricketers in 1970[2] before playing 48 [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) matches and 18 [List A](/source/List_A_cricket) matches for Jamaica between 1973 and 1983. He earned his first and only Test cap for the West Indies against India at [Madras](/source/Chennai) in January 1979, becoming the second player of Chinese descent to represent the West Indies.[1]

Chang participated in the first West Indies [rebel tour](/source/South_African_rebel_tours#West_Indian_tours,_1982–83_and_1983–84) of [apartheid](/source/Apartheid) [South Africa](/source/South_Africa) in 1983, playing in four unofficial [One Day Internationals](/source/One_Day_Internationals). He was subsequently banned for life by the [West Indies Cricket Board](/source/West_Indies_Cricket_Board), although the ban was lifted in 1989.

Following his ostracism from cricket in the West Indies, he suffered a [nervous breakdown](/source/Mental_disorder),[3] and today lives with family in Kingston.[4]
