[Lieutenant-General](/source/Lieutenant-General) '''Henry Wray''' {{Post-nominals|country=GBR|size=100%|CMG}} (1 January 1826 – 6 April 1900) was a [Royal Engineers](/source/Royal_Engineers) officer who arrived in [Fremantle](/source/Fremantle%2C_Western_Australia) on 12 December 1851 and was responsible for carrying out the construction plans for [Fremantle Prison](/source/Fremantle_Prison) for [Edmund Henderson](/source/Edmund_Henderson).

==Military career==
Henry Wray was born in [Demerara](/source/Demerara), now [Guyana](/source/Guyana) on 1 January 1826.<ref name="bio" /> The son of [Charles Wray](/source/Charles_Wray), [Chief Justice](/source/Chief_Justice) of Demerara, Wray graduated from the [Royal Military Academy at Woolwich](/source/Royal_Military_Academy_at_Woolwich) as second lieutenant in 1843.<ref name="bio" /> Postings in [Ireland](/source/Ireland) and [Gibraltar](/source/Gibraltar) followed, and Wray's abilities as an [engineer](/source/engineer) soon saw him promoted to first lieutenant in 1846.<ref name="bio" /> Married in 1848 to Mary Drinkwater, the daughter of eminent historian [Thomas Drinkwater](/source/Thomas_Drinkwater), Wray then moved back to Woolwich in 1850.<ref name="bio" />

In 1851 he was selected to travel to [Western Australia](/source/Western_Australia) with the [20th Company of Royal Sappers and Miners](/source/Royal_Engineers).<ref name="bio" /> After arrival he was appointed as a [magistrate](/source/magistrate) to the colony, and given responsibility for the construction of the Convict Establishment (now [Fremantle Prison](/source/Fremantle_Prison)), based upon designs by [Edmund Henderson](/source/Edmund_Henderson).<ref name="bio" /><ref name="sappers" />

Wray personally designed many buildings, bridges and roads in the [Perth](/source/Perth%2C_Western_Australia) area, and in April 1854 was promoted to rank of Second Captain.<ref name="bio" /> Around this time The Royal Engineers left to serve in the [Crimean War](/source/Crimean_War), but Wray remained and was promoted to First Captain.

After Henderson's departure in 1856, Wray succeeded him as acting [comptroller general of convicts](/source/Comptroller_General_of_Convicts_(Western_Australia)).<ref name="bio" /> After serving in the position for two years, he was described in a letter from the [governor of Western Australia](/source/governor_of_Western_Australia) [Arthur Edward Kennedy](/source/Arthur_Edward_Kennedy) as "a most exemplary and industrious officer who has for many months done the work of several".

Henry Wray left Australia on 2 January 1858 to return to England. In 1860 he was commissioned to help determine the boundary between [British Honduras](/source/British_Honduras) ([Belize](/source/Belize)) and [Guatemala](/source/Guatemala).<ref name="bio" /> This was a difficult undertaking that saw him injured several times by both nature and natives. By this time he had been promoted to the local rank of major. After the signing of the [Anglo-Japanese Friendship Treaty](/source/Anglo-Japanese_Friendship_Treaty), he was then in 1864 posted to [Japan](/source/Japan) with a company of [sapper](/source/sapper)s.<ref name="bio" />

Wray returned to England in 1865 becoming chief royal engineer at [Chatham](/source/Chatham%2C_Medway). He published several works on engineering that were to reform teaching methods in the field. After several years he became chief royal engineer in [Malta](/source/Malta), and was involved in several military and civil engineering projects before moving to [Ireland](/source/Ireland) in 1879 for 7 years. He was appointed a Companion of the [Order of St Michael and St George](/source/Order_of_St_Michael_and_St_George) (CMG) in 1879. Promoted to [major-general](/source/Major_general_(United_Kingdom)) on 26 April 1882,<ref>{{London Gazette |issue=25103 |date=2 May 1882 |page=1998 }}</ref> Wray became [Lieutenant Governor of Jersey](/source/Lieutenant_Governor_of_Jersey) until his retirement in 1887, when he received the honorary rank of [lieutenant-general](/source/Lieutenant-general_(United_Kingdom)). He died from [pneumonia](/source/pneumonia) at [Bournemouth](/source/Bournemouth) on 6 April 1900, aged 74.<ref name="bio" /><ref>{{Cite newspaper The Times |title=Obituary - Lieutenant-General Henry Wray|date=9 April 1900 | page=6 |issue=36111}}</ref>
