Laycock was elected Liberal MP for [Penryn and Falmouth](/source/Penryn_and_Falmouth_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in 1874, but stood down at the next election in 1880.<ref name="craig1832">{{cite book |title=British Parliamentary Election Results 1832-1885 |date=1977 |publisher=Macmillan Press |isbn=978-1-349-02349-3 |editor1-last=Craig |editor1-first=F.
