# Henry Steedman

**Henry Steedman** (1866–1953) was a [Scottish](/source/Scotland)-born [Australian](/source/Australia) [botanist](/source/Botanist).

Born in Scotland in 1866, he emigrated to [Western Australia](/source/Western_Australia) at the age of 21. He was head gardener at the South Perth Zoological Gardens (now [Perth Zoo](/source/Perth_Zoo)) for many years, but was retrenched in the late 1920s with the onset of the [Great Depression](/source/Great_Depression). Thereafter he spent his time collecting seeds and specimens of native plants. He made a number of collecting expeditions, including one east to [Kalgoorlie](/source/Kalgoorlie,_Western_Australia) with [Ivan Carnaby](/source/Ivan_Carnaby); another south as far as [Ravensthorpe](/source/Ravensthorpe,_Western_Australia), also with Carnaby; and one along the west coast from [Bunbury](/source/Bunbury,_Western_Australia) to [Geraldton](/source/Geraldton,_Western_Australia). He collected the type specimens for a number of *[Eucalyptus](/source/Eucalyptus)* taxa, including *[E. crucis](/source/Eucalyptus_crucis)* (Silver Mallee), *[E. erythandra](/source/Eucalyptus_%C3%97_erythrandra)* (Rosebud Gum), *[E. rhodantha](/source/Eucalyptus_rhodantha)* (Rose Mallee) and *[E. steedmanii](/source/Eucalyptus_steedmanii)* (Steedman's Gum). He was joint publisher with [Joyce Blakely](/source/Joyce_Blakely) of the second and third of these species, and also *[E. burdettiana](/source/Eucalyptus_burdettiana)* (Burdett Gum), *[E. carnabyi](/source/Eucalyptus_carnabyi)* and *[E. chrysantha](/source/Eucalyptus_chrysantha)*. *E. steedmanii* was named in his honour, as was *[Acacia steedmanii](/source/Acacia_steedmanii)* and *[Melaleuca fulgens](/source/Melaleuca_fulgens)* subsp. *[steedmanii](/source/Melaleuca_fulgens_subsp._steedmanii)*.
