# Henry Joynt

**Henry Walter Joynt** (born 1 July 1931) is an English former first-class [cricketer](/source/Cricket).

He was born at [St Giles on the Heath](/source/St_Giles_on_the_Heath) in [Devon](/source/Devon) in July 1931. Joynt was educated at [Bradfield College](/source/Bradfield_College), where he played for the school cricket team from 1946 to 1949.[1] He carried out his [National Service](/source/National_Service_(Armed_Forces)_Act_1939) in the [Royal Artillery](/source/Royal_Artillery) in 1950.[2] The following year, upon completion of his National Service, Joynt was made a [Second Lieutenant](/source/Second_Lieutenant) in the Royal Artillery.[3] Joynt studied at [Trinity College, Oxford](/source/Trinity_College,_Oxford), in the early 1950s. He made his debut in [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) for [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club) in 1952 against [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club) at [Oxford](/source/University_Parks#Cricket_ground), playing eleven first-class matches for the university in 1952–1953.[4] He scored 256 runs in his eleven matches, with the highest score of 42 [not out](/source/Not_out);[5] as a [medium pace](/source/Seam_bowling) bowler, Joynt took 13 wickets at a costly [average](/source/Bowling_average) of 63.46, with best innings figures of 3/62.[6] While studying at Trinity, Joynt played [football](/source/Association_football) for [Oxford University A.F.C.](/source/Oxford_University_A.F.C.), winning a [Blue](/source/Blue_(university_sport)#University_of_Oxford) in the sport.[7]

Having been made a temporary [Lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant_(British_Army_and_Royal_Marines)) in June 1952,[8] Joynt was given seniority in the rank in July 1954.[9] 1954 was also the year that he debuted for [Dorset](/source/Dorset_County_Cricket_Club) in [minor counties cricket](/source/Minor_counties_of_English_and_Welsh_cricket), an association he would keep until 1959, having played for the county in the [Minor Counties Championship](/source/Minor_Counties_Championship) eighteen times.[10] By 1955, Joynt was on the [Territorial Army Reserve of Officers](/source/Army_Reserve_(United_Kingdom)) list, retaining the now permanent rank of Lieutenant.[11] He later moved to India, where he made a final appearance in first-class cricket for [Madras](/source/Tamil_Nadu_cricket_team) against a touring [Ceylon](/source/Sri_Lanka_national_cricket_team) team in 1958 at the [Madras Cricket Club Ground](/source/M._A._Chidambaram_Stadium).[4] He achieved his career-best bowling figures in this match, taking 4/36.[6] Joynt played [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) for [South India](/source/South_India_rugby_union_team) as a full-back and placekicker,[12] playing in the 1963 [All India & South Asia Rugby Tournament](/source/All_India_%26_South_Asia_Rugby_Tournament).[7]
