== Biography ==
He was born at the [manse](/source/manse) in [Maxton, Roxburghshire](/source/Maxton%2C_Roxburghshire), his father being the local [Church of Scotland](/source/Church_of_Scotland) minister. He attended the [University of St Andrews](/source/University_of_St_Andrews) where he graduated [Master of Arts](/source/Master_of_Arts) in 1893 and [Bachelor of Divinity](/source/Bachelor_of_Divinity) in 1896, and also lectured at the university in Hebrew and Oriental Studies (1896–97). He was licensed as a [Minister](/source/Ministers_and_elders_of_the_Church_of_Scotland) in 1897 and elected parish minister of [Avondale, Lanarkshire](/source/Avondale%2C_South_Lanarkshire) in 1901.<ref name=":0">{{Cite book |title=The Catholic Directory for the Clergy and Laity in Scotland 1960 |publisher=John S. He was appointed [Auxiliary Bishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_St_Andrews_and_Edinburgh) and Titular Bishop of ''Tipasa in Numidia'' on 30 August 1917 to assist [Archbishop James Smith](/source/James_Smith_(archbishop_of_St_Andrews_and_Edinburgh)).<ref name=":0" /> He was [consecrated](/source/Episcopal_Ordination) to the [Episcopate](/source/Episcopate) on 16 November 1917 at [St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh](/source/St_Mary's_Cathedral%2C_Edinburgh_(Catholic)). The principal [consecrator](/source/consecrator) was [Archbishop John Maguire of Glasgow](/source/John_Aloysius_Maguire) and the principal co-consecrators were [Bishop James McCarthy of Galloway](/source/James_William_McCarthy_(bishop)) and [Bishop John Toner of Dunkeld](/source/John_Toner_(bishop)).<ref name=":1" /> In 1930, he returned to Glasgow as parish priest of Holy Cross, [Crosshill](/source/Crosshill%2C_Glasgow). He continued to undertake episcopal functions such as assisting with the administering of [Holy orders](/source/Holy_orders_in_the_Catholic_Church) and [confirmation](/source/Confirmation_in_the_Catholic_Church) in the Archdiocese. He died on 5 December 1959.<ref name=":1" /><ref name=":0" />
