# Henry Churton

**Henry Norris Churton** (15 January 1843 – 20 January 1904) was an [Anglican](/source/Anglican) [colonial](/source/Colonialism) [bishop](/source/Bishop) in the 20th century.[1]

## Early life and education

Churton was born in 1843 into an ecclesiastical family, the son of [Edward Churton](/source/Edward_Churton), [Archdeacon of Cleveland](/source/Archdeacon_of_Cleveland).[2] He was educated at [Eton](/source/Eton_College) and [University College, Oxford](/source/University_College,_Oxford); and ordained in 1868.[3]

## Career

His first posts were [curacies](/source/Curate) at [Stoke-on-Trent](/source/Stoke-on-Trent) and [East Retford](/source/East_Retford). From 1872 to 1879 he was Vicar of St John Evangelist, [West Bromwich](/source/West_Bromwich) then [Perpetual Curate](/source/Perpetual_curate) of St James’ Chapel, [Avonwick](/source/Avonwick).[4] Later he was [Archdeacon](/source/Archdeacon) of the [Bahamas](/source/Bahamas) before being ordained to the [episcopate](/source/Episcopate) in 1902, succeeding his elder brother ([Edward](/source/Edward_Churton_(bishop))) as [Bishop of Nassau](/source/Bishop_of_Nassau_and_The_Bahamas).[5] He was consecrated [bishop](/source/Bishop_(Anglicanism)) by the Archbishop of Canterbury at [St Paul's Cathedral](/source/St_Paul's_Cathedral) on 13 July 1902.[6] He had previously received the honorary degree [Doctor of Divinity](/source/Doctor_of_Divinity) (DD) from the [University of Oxford](/source/University_of_Oxford) in May 1902.[7]

## Death and legacy

He died in a yachting accident on 20 January 1904.[8]
