== Biography ==
Henry Chapier was born in [Bucharest](/source/Bucharest), [Romania](/source/Romania), the son of an international lawyer and an actress of [Austria](/source/Austria)n descent. Chapier began in 1958 a career as [film critic](/source/film_critic) collaborating with the weekly newspaper ''Arts'' with [François Truffaut](/source/Fran%C3%A7ois_Truffaut). He later became a [stringer](/source/stringer_(journalism)) at ''[L'Express](/source/L'Express_(France))'' and obtained a prize as best beginner journalist in 1959. The same year he became [editor-in-chief](/source/editor-in-chief) of the Culture pages of ''[Combat](/source/Combat_(newspaper))'' and was also the film critic of that newspaper until 1974. He got involved in the 1968 controversy over the dismissal of [Henri Langlois](/source/Henri_Langlois) from the [Cinémathèque Française](/source/Cin%C3%A9math%C3%A8que_Fran%C3%A7aise).

In April 1974, Philippe Tesson created ''[Le Quotidien de Paris](/source/Le_Quotidien_de_Paris)'' and Henry Chapier was the editor-in-chief of the Culture pages. Chapier joined [FR3](/source/FR3) in 1978 as a film and cultural editorialist.
