Henry Butts Born 1575 Died 1632

**Henry Butts,** [D.D.](/source/Doctor_of_Divinity) (1573–1632) was a priest and academic in the second half of the sixteenth century and the first decades of the seventeenth.[1]

Butts was born in [Northamptonshire](/source/Northamptonshire). He was educated at [Corpus Christi College, Cambridge](/source/Corpus_Christi_College%2C_Cambridge), graduating [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) (BA) degree in 1595; and [Master of Arts](/source/Master_of_Arts_(Oxbridge_and_Dublin)) (MA) degree in 1598. He was appointed [Fellow](/source/Fellow) in 1597; and [Master](/source/Master_(college)) in 1626. He was [Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge](/source/List_of_Vice-Chancellors_of_the_University_of_Cambridge) from 1629 to 1631.[2] During his time as vice-chancellor, [Bubonic plague](/source/Bubonic_plague) broke out in Cambridge and, unlike most of the students and scholars, he remained in the city to coordinate the university's response.[3] He held [livings](/source/Incumbent_(ecclesiastical)) at [Birdbrook](/source/Birdbrook) then [Barton Mills](/source/Barton_Mills). He hanged himself on Easter Day (1 April) 1632.[3]
