**Henry Bowen** (December 26, 1841 – April 29, 1915) was a [Virginia](/source/Virginia) lawyer, soldier and [politician](/source/Politician) from [Tazewell County, Virginia](/source/Tazewell_County%2C_Virginia). After raising a unit which became the [22nd Virginia Cavalry](/source/22nd_Virginia_Cavalry), he fought for the Confederate States of America during the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War), after which Bowen served in the [Virginia House of Delegates](/source/Virginia_House_of_Delegates), as well as the [U.S. House of Representatives](/source/U.S._House_of_Representatives), first as a [Readjuster](/source/Readjuster_Party), then as a [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)).

## Family and early life

Born at "[Maiden Spring](/source/Maiden_Spring)," near Tazewell, Tazewell County, Virginia, Bowen was the son of [Democratic](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) Congressman [Rees Bowen](/source/Rees_Bowen), nephew of Senator [John Warfield Johnston](/source/John_Warfield_Johnston) (a postwar member of the [Conservative Party of Virginia](/source/Conservative_Party_of_Virginia_(1867)), and cousin of Tennessee's last [Whig](/source/Whig_Party_(United_States)) governor [William Bowen Campbell](/source/William_B._Campbell). After a private education suitable to his class, he attended [Emory and Henry College](/source/Emory_and_Henry_College) in [Emory, Virginia](/source/Emory%2C_Virginia).

## Confederate captain

Bowen farmed, then entered the [Confederate Army](/source/Confederate_States_Army) in 1861 as a captain in Company H of the [8th Virginia Cavalry](/source/8th_Virginia_Cavalry),[1] which fought with [Payne's](/source/William_H._F._Payne) brigade, [Lee's](/source/Fitzhugh_Lee) division, [Army of Northern Virginia](/source/Army_of_Northern_Virginia). On December 21, 1864, Sheridan's cavalry captured Capt. Bowen at Lacy Springs, Virginia. Upon being paroled on June 19, 1865, Bowen returned to his native county and resumed farming.

## Political career

Bowen was elected and re-elected as one of Tazewell County's representatives in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1869 to 1873. In 1883, he was elected as a [Readjuster](/source/Readjuster_Party) to the [Forty-eighth Congress](/source/48th_United_States_Congress), serving from March 4, 1883 to March 3, 1885. Bowen failed to win renomination in 1884. He was elected as a [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) to the [Fiftieth Congress](/source/50th_United_States_Congress), serving from March 4, 1887 to March 3, 1889. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1888 to the [Fifty-first Congress](/source/51st_United_States_Congress).

Bowen later in life

In 1892, he was a delegate to the [Republican National Convention](/source/Republican_National_Convention). He returned to his farm and raised livestock in Tazewell County, Virginia.

## Death and legacy

Bowen died at his home, "Maiden Spring", in Tazewell County, April 29, 1915, and was buried in Jeffersonville Cemetery, [Tazewell, Virginia](/source/Tazewell%2C_Virginia).
