Its native range is [Eastern Himalayas](/source/Eastern_Himalayas) to southern China and [Papuasia](/source/Papuasia). It is native to the countries of [Assam](/source/Assam) (in India), [Bismarck Archipelago](/source/Bismarck_Archipelago) (island group, part of [Papua New Guinea](/source/Papua_New_Guinea)), China, [East Himalayas](/source/East_Himalayas), [Maluku Islands](/source/Maluku_Islands), New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam.<ref name="POWO" />

The genus name of ''Hemsleya'' is in honour of [William Hemsley](/source/William_Hemsley_(botanist)) (1843–1924), an English botanist.<ref>{{cite book | last=Quattrocchi | first=Umberto | title=CRC World Dictionary of Plant Names, Volume II, D–L | publisher=CRC Press | location=Boca Raton, Florida | year=2000 | isbn=978-0-8493-2676-9}}</ref> It was first described and published in [J.
