The '''Hemrin Dam''' is a [dam](/source/dam) on the [Diyala River](/source/Diyala_River) 100 km northeast of [Baghdad, Iraq](/source/Baghdad%2C_Iraq). The main purpose of the dam is flood control, irrigation and hydroelectric generation. Its power station has a 50 MW capacity. The dam and the attached power house were built in years 1976-1981 by the then Yugoslav company GIK Hidrogradnja (of Sarajevo, now Bosnia-Herzegovina). All the equipment (gates, turbines, generators) were also supplied by the then-Yugoslav companies.<ref>{{cite web|title=Energy and Hydroelectric Power |url=http://www.mowr.gov.iq:81/english/essay.htm |publisher=Iraq Ministry of Water Resources |accessdate=12 June 2011 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120325153220/http://www.mowr.gov.iq:81/english/essay.htm |archivedate=25 March 2012 }}</ref>

A large [archaeological salvage operation](/source/Rescue_archaeology) was undertaken to excavate archaeological sites that were at risk of flooding once the reservoir (now [Hamrin Lake](/source/Lake_Hamrin)) would start to fill. Sites that were excavated as part of this operation included [Tell Madhur](/source/Tell_Madhur), [Tell Suleimah](/source/Tell_Suleimah), [Tell Rashid](/source/Tell_Rashid), [Tell Saadiya](/source/Tell_Saadiya), [Tell Yelkhi](/source/Tell_Yelkhi), and [Tell Abada](/source/Tell_Abada).<ref>{{Cite journal|last=Jasim|first=Sabah Abboud|date=1983|title=Notes on the excavation at Tell Rashid, Iraq|url=https://www.persee.fr/doc/paleo_0153-9345_1983_num_9_1_4336|journal=Paléorient|volume=9|issue=1|pages=99–103|doi=10.3406/paleo.1983.4336}}</ref> One member of the team was the former director of the Iraq Museum, [Nawala Al-Mutawalli](/source/Nawala_Al-Mutawalli).<ref name=":2">{{Citation |last=Al-Mutawalli |first=Nawala A. |title=The Story of Nawala A.
