**Hemalatha**, often credited as **Hema**, is a former Indian actress and dancer who works in Tamil cinema. She is acclaimed for her roles in the popular [soap opera](/source/Indian_soap_opera) *[Kana Kaanum Kaalangal](/source/Kana_Kaanum_Kaalangal)* on [STAR Vijay](/source/STAR_Vijay) and in the [drama](/source/List_of_serials_aired_on_Sun_TV_(India)) [serial](/source/Serial_(radio_and_television)) on [Sun TV](/source/Sun_TV_(India)) *[Thendral](/source/Thendral)*. She was the winner of the reality dance show *[Jodi Number One](/source/Jodi_No.1_(TV_series))* in Season 4 along with [Michael Thangadurai](/source/Michael_Thangadurai).[1][2][3][4][5][6]

## Career

Hemalatha was born in [Tamil](/source/Tamil_people) family, started her career as a child actress.[7] She made her début in films in the [Rajinikanth](/source/Rajinikanth) starrer *[Baashha](/source/Baashha)*[8][9] and then acted in the [Sarath Kumar](/source/Sarath_Kumar) starer *[Suryavamsam](/source/Suryavamsam_(1997_film))*.[10][11] Her first Tamil serial was when she played the role of Baby Kaveri in [*Chithi*](/source/Chithi_(TV_series)).[12][13][14] She played the role of Raghavi, a high school student, in *[Kana Kaanum Kaalangal](/source/Kana_Kaanum_Kaalangal)*[15] and later the role of Deepa in the prime time serial *[Thendral](/source/Thendral)*, which made her a household name and established her as one of the top television actresses.[16]
