==Early life==
Born on 22 April 1915, at [Tezpur](/source/Tezpur),<ref name="assam spider">{{cite web|url=http://www.assamspider.com/resources/3949-Profile-Biography-famous-Assamese-Poet.aspx |title=Profile and Biography of the famous Assamese Poet Hem Barua |publisher=Assamspider.com |accessdate=2013-04-28}}</ref> Hem Barua obtained his M.A. degree from [Calcutta University](/source/Calcutta_University) in 1938 and joined the J.B. College, [Jorhat](/source/Jorhat), in 1941 as lecturer in Assamese and English. He left it next year during the [Quit India Movement](/source/Quit_India_Movement) and was imprisoned in 1943. On his release, he joined the B. ==Literary career==
Hem Barua was the author of several books. ==Political career==
Hem Barua left the Congress in 1948 and became a member of the Socialist party. Later he was elected as the National Executive of the [Praja Socialist Party](/source/Praja_Socialist_Party). He was elected to the [Lok Sabha](/source/Lok_Sabha) from [Gauhati](/source/Gauhati_(Lok_Sabha_constituency)) in 1957, 1962 and 1967 and from [Mangaldoi](/source/Mangaldoi_(Lok_Sabha_constituency)) in 1967. He was the member of the [Lok Sabha](/source/Lok_Sabha) till December 1970.<ref name=":0" />
