**HELOG** is a former [helicopter](/source/Helicopter) [airline company](/source/Airline_company) based in [Germany](/source/Germany) which runs training courses in [Africa](/source/Africa).[1]

## Overview

According to the company's website, it is headquartered in the Bavarian town of [Bad Reichenhall](/source/Bad_Reichenhall).[2]

Its chief project was an academy in [Liberia](/source/Liberia) which trains school-leavers to maintain and repair machinery.[3] The academy is supported by Germany's [Federal Ministry of Education and Research](/source/Federal_Ministry_of_Education_and_Research_(Germany)).[4] Helog says it has also signed an agreement with aid agency [Mercy Corps](/source/Mercy_Corps) to train students how to install [renewable energy](/source/Renewable_energy) systems in households.[5]

## History

In its previous incarnation, Helog operated a range of aviation services, including:

- - Aerial firefighting in Germany and Switzerland, operating out of [Ainring](/source/Ainring) and [Küssnacht](/source/K%C3%BCssnacht).[7] - Humanitarian aid, disaster relief, logistics and surveillance.[8] - [Hovercraft](/source/Hovercraft) transport in [Sierra Leone](/source/Sierra_Leone) between [Lungi International Airport](/source/Lungi_International_Airport) and [Freetown](/source/Freetown).[9][10] Helog says that during more than 40 years of operation, it also gained experience in [heavy lift](/source/Heavy_lift) and [logging](/source/Heli-logging).[11]

In 2009, WikiLeaks released a United Nations audit from 2007 which detailed invoices submitted by Helog.[citation needed] The UN disagreed about the availability of helicopters in [Sudan](/source/Sudan) during a $29 million peacekeeping contract.[citation needed] In 2010, police in Freetown became involved when a Helog helicopter was thought to have landed at a hospital without prior notice.[12] In 2012, Helog management decided to refocus their business on training.[11] In August 2016, Helog opened its academy in Liberia.[4]
