The **Hellyer Gorge** is a [gorge](/source/Canyon) in [Tasmania](/source/Tasmania), located between [Stanley](/source/Stanley%2C_Tasmania) and [Cradle Mountain](/source/Cradle_Mountain). The [Hellyer River](/source/Hellyer_River) flows through the gorge, which is named after [Henry Hellyer](/source/Henry_Hellyer).[1]

Throughout the Hellyer Gorge is a [rainforest](/source/Rainforest) with [sassafras](/source/Sassafras), giant [myrtle](/source/Myrtaceae), and large [ferns](/source/Fern).[2] The gorge is the site of the Hellyer Gorge State Reserve.[3]

The [Murchison Highway](/source/Murchison_Highway) passes through the gorge area with many sharp and steep bends.[1] This highway provides the setting to a stage of [Targa Tasmania](/source/Targa_Tasmania). Being subject to [black ice](/source/Black_ice),[4] this portion of road has now been bypassed by the newer Ridgley Highway. Some bush-walking tracks have been [blazed](/source/Trail_blazing) for tourists.
