***Hello, Fraulein!*** ([German](/source/German_language): ***Hallo, Fräulein!***) is a 1949 German [musical film](/source/Musical_film) directed by [Rudolf Jugert](/source/Rudolf_Jugert) and starring [Margot Hielscher](/source/Margot_Hielscher), [Hans Söhnker](/source/Hans_S%C3%B6hnker) and [Peter van Eyck](/source/Peter_van_Eyck).[1] It was made by the [Munich](/source/Munich)-based company [Bavaria Film](/source/Bavaria_Film) in what would shortly become [West Germany](/source/West_Germany). It marked the German debut of van Eyck who had actually been born in [Pomerania](/source/Pomerania) but had spent many years in the United States, leading him to be promoted in the film's publicity as an American actor.[2]

The film's sets were designed by the [art director](/source/Art_director) [Max Mellin](/source/Max_Mellin). It was shot at the [Bavaria Studios](/source/Bavaria_Studios) in Munich. The film's music combines elements of American [big band](/source/Big_band) [jazz](/source/Jazz) and German [folk music](/source/Volksmusik).[3]

## Synopsis

In [Southern Germany](/source/Southern_Germany) in the months after the end of the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War), the commander of American forces occupying a German town tries to promote friendship with the locals by organising a musical show with the assistance of a female [music student](/source/Music_student) who has recently returned from entertaining German soldiers on the [Eastern Front](/source/Eastern_Front_(World_War_II)). By inviting a multi-national [orchestra](/source/Orchestra) to perform, the two achieve greater international harmony although the student ultimately decides to marry a local [architect](/source/Architect) rather than the American soldier.
