A '''helioscope''' is an instrument used in observing the [Sun](/source/Sun) and [sunspots](/source/Sunspot).
The helioscope was first used by [Benedetto Castelli](/source/Benedetto_Castelli) (1578–1643) and refined by [Galileo Galilei](/source/Galileo_Galilei) (1564–1642). The method involves projecting an image of the sun onto a white sheet of paper suspended in a darkened room with the use of a telescope.<ref>[http://catalogue.museogalileo.it/indepth/Helioscope.html Helioscope] - Museo Galileo</ref><ref>[http://catalogue.museogalileo.it/multimedia/Helioscope.html Helioscope video] - Museo Galileo</ref>

The first ''machina helioscopica'' or helioscope was designed by [Christoph Scheiner](/source/Christoph_Scheiner) (1575 –1650) to assist his [sunspot](/source/sunspot) observations.<ref>{{cite book|last=Scheiner|first=Christoph|url=http://fermi.imss.fi.it/rd/bdv?/bdviewer/bid=000000367767&lng=en |title=Rosa Ursina|date=1630|pages=137–8}} (Latin)</ref>

In the context of modern astroparticle physics, the term ''helioscope'' can also refer to an experiment that seeks to observe hypothetical particles (such as the [axion](/source/axion)) produced inside the sun. Examples of such helioscope experiments searching for axions include the [CERN Axion Solar Telescope](/source/CERN_Axion_Solar_Telescope) and [International Axion Observatory](/source/International_Axion_Observatory).
