Born in [New York City](/source/New_York_City) in 1920, Dinerman received her education at [Hunter College](/source/Hunter_College) and [Columbia University](/source/Columbia_University).<ref name="Berelson"/> Later, she worked as a researcher in the [United States Office of War Information](/source/United_States_Office_of_War_Information)<ref name="News&Notes">

In 1981, the [World Association for Public Opinion Research](/source/World_Association_for_Public_Opinion_Research) established the Helen Dinerman Award – "in memory of Helen Dinerman's scientific achievements over three decades of public opinion research" – to recognize individuals who have made "significant contributions to survey research methodology".<ref>
