**Heatonville** is a settlement approximately 13 km north-west of [Empangeni](/source/Empangeni). It was named after [George Heaton Nicholls](/source/George_Heaton_Nicholls) (1876-1959), member of Parliament for Zululand from 1920, later also Administrator of [Natal](/source/Natal_Province) and [High Commissioner for South Africa](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=High_Commissioner_for_South_Africa&action=edit&redlink=1) from 1944.[1]

The area around Heatonville has a much deeper human history than the written local record suggests. A 1959 archaeological paper on [“Middle and Later Stone Age Assemblages near Heatonville, Zululand](https://www.jstor.org/stable/3886640)” places prehistoric activity in the vicinity of Heatonville and Lower Umfolozi.
