'''Heathrow Hub''' is an independent proposal to [expand capacity](/source/Expansion_of_Heathrow_Airport) at London's [Heathrow Airport](/source/Heathrow_Airport), put forward by Jock Lowe, a former [Concorde](/source/Concorde) pilot, and Mark Bostock, an ex-director at [Arup Group](/source/Arup_Group).<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20160304035921/http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Industry/article1234445.ece The Sunday Times - Captain Jock, clear to land at four-runway Heathrow - 24 March 2013]</ref>

The proposal was shortlisted in Sir Howard Davies' [Airports Commission](/source/Airports_Commission)'s interim report.<ref>{{citation |url=https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/271231/airports-commission-interim-report.pdf |title=Airports Commission: Interim Report |publisher=gov.uk |pages=15 |date=1 December 2013 |accessdate=21 March 2016 |archive-date=3 February 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170203071044/https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/271231/airports-commission-interim-report.pdf |url-status=live }}</ref>

Heathrow Hub proposes extending both of the existing runways up to a total length of about 7,000 metres and dividing them into four so that they each provide two, full length, runways, allowing simultaneous take-offs and landings.<ref>[https://www.ft.com/content/f0a05b64-8987-11e2-ad3f-00144feabdc0 Financial Times - Pilot plots longer Heathrow runways - 10 March 2013]</ref> The aim is to complete the construction within five years and with 100% private funds.<ref name="CPS paper">{{Cite web |url=http://www.cps.org.uk/files/reports/original/130705094049-DoubleuponHeathrow.pdf |title=CPS paper - Double Upon Heathrow - July 2013 |access-date=8 November 2013 |archive-date=26 May 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160526204815/http://www.cps.org.uk/files/reports/original/130705094049-DoubleuponHeathrow.pdf |url-status=dead }}</ref>

Available capacity would be doubled while keeping a percentage of the slots unused in order to alter noise levels. In addition, early morning flights could land much further west along the extended runways so reducing the noise footprint for a large area of west London.<ref name="Times Letter">{{Cite web |url=https://www.thetimes.com/travel/advice/increased-capacity-at-heathrow-phc3zpn6zqb |title=The Times - Increased capacity at Heathrow - 30 October 2013 |access-date=3 April 2025 |archive-date=7 June 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250607225130/https://www.thetimes.com/travel/advice/increased-capacity-at-heathrow-phc3zpn6zqb |url-status=live }}</ref> Other noise mitigation techniques include using two-stage approaches, and steeper, curved climb-outs.<ref name="CPS paper"/>

The Heathrow Hub concept includes a new multimodal air, rail and road interchange located approximately two miles north of Heathrow's Terminal 5 to accommodate passenger growth. This includes a new terminal, a new railway station connecting Heathrow to the [West Coast Mainline and Crossrail](/source/Heathrow_Hub_railway_station) and direct access to the M25 motorway.<ref name="CPS paper"/>

According to a paper published by the think-tank the [Centre for Policy Studies](/source/Centre_for_Policy_Studies), the Heathrow Hub proposal would cost ~£10 billion compared to the £65 billion estimated cost of the [Thames Estuary Airport](/source/Thames_Estuary_Airport) situated on the [Isle of Grain](/source/Isle_of_Grain) and promoted by London Mayor [Boris Johnson](/source/Boris_Johnson).<ref name="CPS paper"/><ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.ft.com/content/b7ceb194-ec8f-11e2-8096-00144feabdc0 |title=Financial Times - Boris Johnson favours inner Thames estuary site for hub airport - 14 July 2013 |access-date=6 October 2025 |archive-date=21 February 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250221214538/https://www.ft.com/content/b7ceb194-ec8f-11e2-8096-00144feabdc0 |url-status=live }}</ref> Heathrow Hub estimates the cost of implementing its expansion plan to reach ~£12.5 billion, including road diversions and a train station.<ref name="Times Letter"/> The commission estimates the cost to be around £13.5 billion; higher than HH's own estimate.<ref>{{citation |last=Dunn |first=Graham |url=http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/heathrow-gatwick-expansion-costs-under-estimated-davies-405890/ |title=Heathrow, Gatwick expansion costs under-estimated: Davies |work=[Flightglobal](/source/Flightglobal) |publisher=Reed Business Information |date=11 November 2014 |accessdate=11 November 2014 |archive-date=15 August 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190815064300/https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/heathrow-gatwick-expansion-costs-under-estimated-davies-405890/ |url-status=live }}</ref>

The technical work for the proposal has been done by [URS Corporation](/source/URS_Corporation), an international engineering consultancy.<ref>{{cite news |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/transport/10531901/Heathrow-runway-extension-plan-dreamt-up-25-years-ago.html |title=Heathrow runway extension plan dreamt up 25 years ago |work=The Daily Telegraph |date=21 December 2013 |accessdate=21 March 2016 |archive-date=4 July 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220704001644/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/transport/10531901/Heathrow-runway-extension-plan-dreamt-up-25-years-ago.html |url-status=live }}</ref>
