'''Haystack Butte''' is a {{convert|7,486|ft|meter|adj=mid|-elevation|abbr=off|sp=us}} summit located in the [Lewis Range](/source/Lewis_Range), of [Glacier National Park](/source/Glacier_National_Park_(US)) in the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Montana](/source/Montana). It is situated one mile west of the [Continental Divide](/source/Continental_Divide_of_the_Americas), in [Flathead County](/source/Flathead_County%2C_Montana), above the [Weeping Wall](/source/Weeping_Wall_(Montana)) on its south slope. [Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is significant as the west aspect rises {{convert|3,900|ft|m|abbr=off|sp=us}} above McDonald Creek in less than 1.5 mile. It can be seen from [Logan Pass](/source/Logan_Pass), and from [Going-to-the-Sun Road](/source/Going-to-the-Sun_Road) which traverses the west and south slopes of the peak. The nearest higher neighbor is [Mount Gould](/source/Mount_Gould_(Montana)), {{convert|1.07|mi|km}} to the northeast.<ref name=pb/> Climbing access is via the [Highline Trail](/source/Highline_Trail_(Glacier_National_Park)). This geographical feature's descriptive name was on maps as early as 1904, and was officially adopted March 6, 1929, by the [United States Board on Geographic Names](/source/United_States_Board_on_Geographic_Names)<ref name="gnis"/>

==Climate==
Based on the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification), Haystack Butte is located in an alpine [subarctic climate](/source/subarctic_climate) zone with long, cold, snowy winters, and cool to warm summers.<ref name=KGcc2007>{{Cite Köppen-Geiger cc 2007}}</ref> Temperatures can drop below −10 °F with wind chill factors below −30 °F. Precipitation [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from the peak drains into McDonald Creek, thence [Lake McDonald](/source/Lake_McDonald).

==Geology==
Like other mountains in Glacier National Park, Haystack Butte Tail is composed of [sedimentary rock](/source/sedimentary_rock) laid down during the [Precambrian](/source/Precambrian) to [Jurassic](/source/Jurassic) periods. Formed in shallow seas, this sedimentary rock was initially uplifted beginning 170 million years ago when the [Lewis Overthrust](/source/Lewis_Overthrust) fault pushed an enormous slab of [precambrian](/source/precambrian) rocks {{convert|3|mi|km|1|abbr=on}} thick, {{convert|50|mi|km}} wide and {{convert|160|mi|km}} long over younger rock of the [cretaceous](/source/cretaceous) period.<ref name=gadd>{{citation|title=Geology of the Rocky Mountains and Columbias|author=Gadd, Ben |year=2008}}</ref> The bulk of the peak is composed of limestone of the [Siyeh Formation](/source/Siyeh_Formation), with a [diorite](/source/diorite) cap.<ref>[http://npshistory.com/handbooks/cooperating_associations/glac/gnha-3-1971.pdf James L.
