# Hawash!

***Hawash!*** is a 1984 [album](/source/Album) by [Finnish](/source/Finland) [gospel musician](/source/Gospel_music) [Jaakko Löytty](/source/Jaakko_L%C3%B6ytty). It is his first album with clear [African](/source/Africa) influences.

The title song was inspired by the [Oromo](/source/Oromo_people) musician [Ali Mohammed Birra](/source/Ali_Birra), whom Löytty met in 1976 during the [Etiopiasafari](/source/Etiopiasafari) tour. He met Birra in an [Addis Abeba](/source/Addis_Abeba) [nightclub](/source/Nightclub) and bought his LP, which included a song about the River [Hawash](/source/Awash_River). Löytty wrote down a translation of the lyrics of the song on the inner sleeve of the album. This song later inspired him to write a song of the same name, the title song of this album.
