**Hausken Church** ([Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language): *Hausken kyrkje*) is a [parish church](/source/Parish_church) of the [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) in the large [Stavanger Municipality](/source/Stavanger_Municipality) in [Rogaland](/source/Rogaland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). It is located in the village of [Vikevåg](/source/Vikev%C3%A5g) on the [island of Rennesøy](/source/Rennes%C3%B8y_(island)). It is one of the two churches for the Rennesøy [parish](/source/Parish) which is part of the [Tungenes prosti](/source/Tungenes_prosti) ([deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Stavanger](/source/Diocese_of_Stavanger). The white, wooden church was built in a [long church](/source/Long_church) design in 1857 using designs by the [architect](/source/Architect) [Christian Heinrich Grosch](/source/Christian_Heinrich_Grosch). The church seats about 250 people.[1][2]

## History

Old picture of the present church

The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1327, but the church was not built that year. The original church was a [stave church](/source/Stave_church). In 1752, the old church was heavily renovated. The [nave](/source/Nave) was torn down and rebuilt, but the old [choir](/source/Choir_(architecture)) was retained.[3]

In 1814, this church served as an [election church](/source/Election_church) ([Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language): *valgkirke*).[4] Together with more than 300 other parish churches across Norway, it was a polling station for elections to the 1814 [Norwegian Constituent Assembly](/source/Norwegian_Constituent_Assembly) which wrote the [Constitution of Norway](/source/Constitution_of_Norway). This was Norway's first national elections. Each [church parish](/source/Prestegjeld) was a constituency that elected people called "electors" who later met together in each county to elect the representatives for the assembly that was to meet at [Eidsvoll Manor](/source/Eidsvoll_Manor) later that year.[4][5]

In 1857, the entire church was torn down because it was too small for the congregation. A new church was built the same year on the same site. That church is still in use.[3]
