This article is about a type of forest management. For the rare name of a type of German farmhouse, also spelt *Hauberg*, see [Haubarg](/source/Haubarg).

**Hauberg** is a type of communal [forest](/source/Forest) management that is typical of the [Siegerland](/source/Siegerland) and adjacent parts of the [Lahn-Dill Uplands](/source/Gladenbach_Uplands) and the [Westerwald](/source/Westerwald) in central [Germany](/source/Germany). Its aim is to manage the forest in order to produce [tanbark](/source/Tanbark) and [charcoal](/source/Charcoal) for the regionally important [iron ore](/source/Iron_ore) industry as well as [firewood](/source/Firewood). In addition to forestry uses, the area also has agricultural uses, such as the growing of [rye](/source/Rye) and [buckwheat](/source/Buckwheat), typical of [shifting cultivation](/source/Shifting_cultivation), in the year after the timber harvest, as well as subsequent communal grazing ([commons](/source/Common_land)).

## Overview

The Hauberg is an [oak](/source/Oak)-[birch](/source/Birch) [coppiced woodland](/source/Coppiced_woodland), in which other trees are occasionally scattered. With a cycle of from 16 to 20 years the Hauberg undergoes [clearcutting](/source/Clearcutting) or [coppicing](/source/Coppicing), leaving the stumps in the ground to begin growing again. Only in the year after clearfelling is the land used for [grain](/source/Grain). In years when there is a lot of [mast](/source/Mast_(botany)), pigs are kept in the Hauberg.

With the decline in demand for [tanbark](/source/Tanbark) and [charcoal](/source/Charcoal) this form of management has lost its significance. In the second half of the 20th century large areas were turned over to [high forest](/source/High_forest_(woodland)) management. The remaining [low forest](/source/Low_forest) stands are almost exclusively devoted to the production of firewood and industrial wood.
