During the period of [Zakarid Armenia](/source/Zakarid_Armenia), at end of the 12th century, the Armenian principalities of the region consisted of the three branches of [Khachen](/source/Principality_of_Khachen): [Tsar](/source/Zar%2C_Azerbaijan), Haterk and [Khokhanaberd](/source/Khokhanaberd) (with their spiritual center at [Gandzasar](/source/Gandzasar_monastery)) along with the Khaghbakian family in northern Syunik ([Vayots Dzor](/source/Vayots_Dzor)). The Armenian princes of Haterk (Upper Khachen) were established on the left bank of the [Tartar River](/source/Tartar_(river)), with their spiritual center being at [Dadivank](/source/Dadivank), the principal church of which was established by Arzu-Khatun, the wife of Vakhtang of Haterk. Prince Hasan of Haterk left an inscription at Dadivank in 1182. The leading family among the three Khachen princes was the one from Haterk. Vakhtang of Haterk contributed in 1191 to the building of the Nor Getik monastery (present day [Goshavank](/source/Goshavank) in northeastern Armenia).<ref name="caucasianknot">{{cite book|author=Levon Chorbajian, Patrick Donabédian, Claude Mutafian|date=1994|title=The Caucasian Knot: The History & Geopolitics of Nagorno-Karabagh|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=OUlnYdOHJ3wC&pg=PA65|isbn=9781856492881}}</ref>{{rp|pp=64–66}} In the 15th century, Artsakh was subjugated by the [Turkmen](/source/Turkoman_(ethnonym)) tribes of [Qara Qoyunlu](/source/Qara_Qoyunlu) and [Aq Qoyunlu](/source/Aq_Qoyunlu), and Haterk was destroyed.
