==Biography==
Hofmann studied philosophy and law at [Heidelberg University](/source/Heidelberg_University), [LMU Munich](/source/LMU_Munich), and the [University of Erlangen–Nuremberg](/source/University_of_Erlangen%E2%80%93Nuremberg) under professors such as [Ernst Forsthoff](/source/Ernst_Forsthoff), [Wolfgang Kunkel](/source/Wolfgang_Kunkel), [Hans-Georg Gadamer](/source/Hans-Georg_Gadamer), and [Karl Löwith](/source/Karl_L%C3%B6with). After the ''[Staatsexamen](/source/Staatsexamen)'', he became a certified lawyer. He taught at the [University of Würzburg](/source/University_of_W%C3%BCrzburg) from 1976 to 1992, when he became a professor at the [Humboldt University of Berlin](/source/Humboldt_University_of_Berlin), eventually serving as Vice-President of the university.
