# Haskell Ross

**Haskell Eugene "Hack" Ross** (March 28, 1908 – December 9, 1966) was an American trainer of [Thoroughbred racehorses](/source/Thoroughbred_racing) based in California who race-conditioned the colt [Warfare](/source/Warfare_(horse)) to [National Championship](/source/American_Champion_Two-Year-Old_Male_Horse) honors in 1959. Hack Ross Avenue, near the site where the defunct [Bay Meadows Racetrack](/source/Bay_Meadows_Racetrack) once stood in [San Mateo, California](/source/San_Mateo,_California), is named in his honor.

Prior to his career in horse racing, Ross had been a student at [Southern Methodist University](/source/Southern_Methodist_University) in [Dallas, Texas](/source/Dallas), where he had been a [fullback](/source/Fullback_(gridiron_football)) and [letterman](/source/Letterman_(sports)) with the [SMU Mustangs](/source/SMU_Mustangs).[1][2]
