**Harvie Andre**, [PC](/source/King's_Privy_Council_for_Canada) (July 27, 1940 – October 21, 2012) was a [Canadian](/source/Canadians) [engineer](/source/Engineer), businessman, politician and [federal Cabinet](/source/Cabinet_of_Canada) minister.[1][2]

Born in [Edmonton](/source/Edmonton), [Alberta](/source/Alberta), Andre was educated at the [University of Alberta](/source/University_of_Alberta) (’62, PhD ’66) and pursued part of his postgraduate studies at the [California Institute of Technology](/source/California_Institute_of_Technology) before becoming a professor of [chemical engineering](/source/Chemical_engineering) at the [University of Calgary](/source/University_of_Calgary) from 1966 to 1972. In the [1972 general election](/source/1972_Canadian_federal_election) he won a [seat](/source/Legislative_seat) in the [House of Commons of Canada](/source/House_of_Commons_of_Canada), where he served as the [Progressive Conservative](/source/Progressive_Conservative_Party_of_Canada) [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(Canada)) (MP) for [Calgary Centre](/source/Calgary_Centre) for twenty-one years.

In opposition, Andre was a vocal opponent of [Petro-Canada](/source/Petro-Canada) and the [National Energy Program](/source/National_Energy_Program). He also served as the [defence critic](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Defence_critic&action=edit&redlink=1).

He was appointed to the Cabinet after the [1984 election](/source/1984_Canadian_federal_election) brought the [Tories](/source/Tory) to power under [Brian Mulroney](/source/Brian_Mulroney). Andre served as [Minister of Supply and Services](/source/Minister_of_Supply_and_Services_(Canada)) until 1985 when he became [Associate Minister of National Defence](/source/Associate_Minister_of_National_Defence_(Canada)). From 1986 to 1989, he was [Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs](/source/Minister_of_Consumer_and_Corporate_Affairs) and then [Minister of Regional Industrial Expansion](/source/Minister_of_Regional_Industrial_Expansion_(Canada)) until 1990. In addition, in 1987 Mulroney gave Andre responsibility for Canada Post Corporation.

For the last three years of the Mulroney government, Andre was [Government House Leader](/source/Leader_of_the_Government_in_the_House_of_Commons). He did not run for re-election in the [1993 federal election](/source/1993_Canadian_federal_election), and returned to private life.

After leaving politics, Andre was involved in the business world, particularly the energy sector, as president of [Cresvard Corporation](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cresvard_Corporation&action=edit&redlink=1) since 1998, chief executive of Calgary-based [Wenzel Downhole Tools](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wenzel_Downhole_Tools&action=edit&redlink=1) and chairman of [BowEnergy Resources](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=BowEnergy_Resources&action=edit&redlink=1) since 2001. He served on numerous corporate [boards of directors](/source/Board_of_directors).

Andre was married, and had two daughters and one son.
