'''''Harttia''''' is a [genus](/source/genus) of freshwater [ray-finned fish](/source/ray-finned_fish) is a species of freshwater [ray-finned fishes](/source/Actinopterygii) belonging to the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Loricariidae](/source/Loricariidae), the suckermouth armored catfishes, and the [subfamily](/source/subfamily) [Loricariinae](/source/Loricariinae), the mailed catfishes. The species in this genus are founsd in South America.

==Etymology==
The genus name comes from [Charles Frederick Hartt](/source/Charles_Frederick_Hartt), a geologist, paleontologist and naturalist, who collected the many specimens during the [Thayer Expedition](/source/Thayer_Expedition) to Brazil in the years 1865–1866.<ref name = ETYFish>{{cite web |url=https://etyfish.org/loricariinae/ |title=Family LORICARIIDAE: Subfamily LORICARIINAE Rafinesque 1815 (Suckermouth Armored Catfishes) |date=30 December 2025 |author=Christopher Scarpf |access-date=7 January 2026 |work=The ETYFish Project Fish Name Etymology Database |publisher=Christopher Scharpf}}</ref>

==Taxonomy==
As of 1997, ''Harttia'' was considered a [monophyletic](/source/monophyly) taxon.<ref name="Langeani"/> However, ''Harttia'' is in need of revision. For example, the [synonymy](/source/synonym_(taxonomy)) of ''[Cteniloricaria](/source/Cteniloricaria)'' with ''Harttia'' was questionable because it rested solely on the characteristics of ''Harttia fowleri'' without considering the [type species](/source/biological_type) of ''Cteniloricaria''.<ref name="Covain"/>

== Species ==
''Harttia'' contains the following recognized species:<ref name = "Cof genus">{{Cof genus|genus=Harttia|access-date=7 January 2026}}</ref>

==Distribution and habitat==
Distribution of ''Harttia'' species primarily includes rivers draining the [Guyana Shield](/source/Guyana_Shield), coastal rivers in northeastern [Brazil](/source/Brazil), and the [Amazon River](/source/Amazon_River) basin.<ref name="Covain"/> The greatest species diversity of ''Harttia'', occurs in the Pre-[Cambrian](/source/Cambrian) Brazilian Shield region.<ref name="Langeani">{{cite journal|journal=Copeia|year=2001|issue=1|pages=136–142|title=New Species of ''Harttia'' (Loricariidae, Loricariinae) from the Rio São Francisco Basin|first=Francisco|last=Langeani|author2=Oyakawa, Osvaldo T. |author3=Montoya-Burgos, Juan I. |doi=10.1643/0045-8511(2001)001[0136:NSOHLL]2.0.CO;2|volume=2001|editor1-last=Schaefer|editor1-first=S. ==Ecology==
Representatives of this genus seem to be open brooders.<ref name="Covain"/>
