The '''Hart Ranges''' are a [major subrange](/source/mountain_range) of the [Canadian Rockies](/source/Canadian_Rockies) located in northeastern [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia) and western [Alberta](/source/Alberta). The mountains constitute the southernmost portion of the [Northern Rocky Mountains](/source/Northern_Rocky_Mountains).

The Hart Ranges were named in honour of [British Columbia Premier](/source/Premier_of_British_Columbia) [John Hart](/source/John_Hart_(Canadian_politician)), as is the highway which traverses the [Pine Pass](/source/Pine_Pass) in the northern part of the range, connecting the [north-central Interior](/source/British_Columbia_Interior) of the province to the [Peace River Regional District](/source/Peace_River_Regional_District) to the northeast.<ref name=bcgnis>{{cite bcgnis|7728|Hart Ranges|2023-07-06}}</ref>

==Geography==
The boundaries of the Hart Ranges are the [Rocky Mountain Trench](/source/Rocky_Mountain_Trench) and the [McGregor Plateau](/source/McGregor_Plateau) on the west/southwest, the Peace Reach of [Williston Lake](/source/Williston_Lake) on the north, a certain line of demarcation with the [Rocky Mountain Foothills](/source/Rocky_Mountain_Foothills) to the east/northeast, and the Jarvis Creek to the south.<ref name="Landforms of British Columbia">{{cite book|last=Holland|first=Stuart S.|title=Bulletin 48: Landforms of British Columbia--A Physiographic Outline|year=1976|publisher=K. The Hart Ranges is home to two [ultra-prominent peak](/source/ultra-prominent_peak)s, [Mount Crysdale](/source/Mount_Crysdale) and [Mount Ovington](/source/Mount_Ovington). [Mount Ida](/source/Mount_Ida_(Continental_Ranges)) and [Mount Sir Alexander](/source/Mount_Sir_Alexander) are south of Jarvis Creek and are in the [Continental Ranges](/source/Continental_Ranges), which comprise the main and best-known part of the Rocky Mountains and run all the way south to [Marias Pass](/source/Marias_Pass) in [Montana](/source/Montana).

;Sub-ranges
Official subdivisions of the Hart Ranges include the:
*[Misinchinka Range](/source/Misinchinka_Ranges) (from the Peace Arm of the [Williston Reservoir](/source/Williston_Lake) to [Monkman Pass](/source/Monkman_Pass))
**[Murray Range](/source/Murray_Range)
**[Pioneer Range](/source/Pioneer_Range)
**[Solitude Range](/source/Solitude_Range)

Other areas of the Hart Ranges have no subdesignations though the area around Mount Sir Alexander has been dubbed the Mount Sir Alexander Group by The Canadian Mountain Encyclopedia; however, this is not an official designation.

==Industry==
The Hart Ranges are the location of a number of large coal mines focused on the remote communities of [Tumbler Ridge](/source/Tumbler_Ridge) and [Chetwynd](/source/Chetwynd%2C_British_Columbia).

==Preservation==
The southernmost tip of the mountain range is preserved within [Kakwa Provincial Park and Protected Area](/source/Kakwa_Provincial_Park_and_Protected_Area). Other provincial parks located within the range include [Monkman Provincial Park](/source/Monkman_Provincial_Park) and [Hole-in-the-Wall Provincial Park](/source/Hole-in-the-Wall_Provincial_Park).
