== Background ==
Shields was born in [Uptown New Orleans](/source/Uptown_New_Orleans), the younger brother of noted clarinetist [Larry Shields](/source/Larry_Shields). He spent almost his entire career in New Orleans. He played with the bands of [Norman Brownlee](/source/Norman_Brownlee), [Sharkey Bonano](/source/Sharkey_Bonano), [Tom Brown](/source/Tom_Brown_(trombonist)), [Johnny Wiggs](/source/Johnny_Wiggs), and others. Many fellow musicians regarded Harry as superior to his more famous brother, Larry.<ref name="Rose_p177">{{cite book|accessdate=2008-08-14
